Ten Things to do in Tenerife

The largest and most populated of the Canary Islands, Tenerife, is one of the most popular holiday destinations in all of Europe. It is estimated that around five million tourists visit the island each year, taking in the stunning sights, beautiful beaches and tropical climate.

On paper, everything about Tenerife is appealing – sun, sea, sand and sights – but what is there to do when you get there? After all, cheap holidays to Tenerife are great but not everyone is cut out for lying around by the pool or spending hour after hour down at the beach topping up the suntan. Tenerife is far more than just a hot island off the coast of Spain. Here are ten reasons why you should go:

1. Loro Parque, Puerto de la Cruz

Translated into English, Loro Parque literally means “Parrot Park” and this is because the theme park is based entirely on the tropical birds. It has developed into a zoo, with an aquarium and penguinarium, as well as plenty of amazing animals and shows to keep the whole family entertained.

2. Siam Park, Adeje

Viewed as one of the best water parks in the world, Siam Park lets you crash into the water, down numerous water slides, as well as giving you the chance to see some amazing wildlife. Whether you’re looking for a cultural experience, admiring the sea lions, or an adrenaline-fueled day hurtling along meandering rivers and down water slides, Siam Park caters for all.

3. Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, Santa Cruz

The Museum of Nature and Man provides some astonishing insights into the history of the Canary Islands and the aboriginal inhabitants known as The Guanches, who occupied Tenerife before the arrival of the first Europeans. This is a cultural experience for everyone to get involved in, and means you can go home as a real Tenerife expert!

4. Helidream Canarias

What better way to see the island than by helicopter! Local tourist guides will be able to fly you up and give you a personal guided tour of the island, pointing out all of the landmarks, tourist hotspots - allowing you to see Tenerife in all its glory.

5. Plaza Charco, Puerto de la Cruz

Stunning views and a plaza full of amazing local restaurants and bars allow you sit back and watch the world go by whilst sampling the local delicacies (and a cocktail or two of course – it would be rude not to)!

6. Scuba Diving

The Mediterranean is a haven for some amazing sea creatures and with the waters around the Canaries so clear and blue, scuba diving is a must. With experienced divers, you’ll get the chance to see some amazing tropical fish, along with other creatures, such as turtles that you can get up close and personal with.

7. Music Hall Tavern

If you’re looking for something to do in the evening, then taking in one of the local shows is a must. These shows provide a whole new experience that will leave you laughing, crying and singing along – even if you don’t know you’re doing it. The Music Hall Tavern always has a show on.

8. Golf del Sur, San Miguel de Abona

If you’re looking to go on a golfing holiday, or you just fancy a round while you’re there, then the beautiful course at Golf del Sur is one you just have to play.

9. Mercado de Nuestra Sanora de Africa, Santa Cruz

Looking to take something back to the family and friends at home? Look no further than the traditional street market in the town centre, which offers local goods, allowing you can take back a genuine memento of your time in Tenerife to share with those you love most.

10. Bodegas Monje, El Sauzal

Are you a wine lover? If so, then you have to visit the winery at El Sauzal, which offers a unique experience to discover the traditional way of creating wine in the Canaries. You can also taste the wines and local dishes that go with them.
